Budget: High
During the bloody Battle of Monte Cassino, the remnants of Baker Company's Second Platoon recount their journey from the plantations of Hawai'i, and the indignities they endured as Japanese-American soldiers stripped of their weapons in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack. Abruptly swept off to the U.S. mainland, they experience racism in the South but a visit to an internment camp gives them further motivation to fight to prove their loyalty. After finally getting their chance to serve in combat, they demonstrate extraordinary acts of heroism that lead to several Medals of Honor and pave the way for the formation of the famed all-Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
Films about Asian-Americans are rare, but with the current plague of anti-Asian rhetoric and hate crimes, it's absolutely imperative that these stories be told in order to further understanding of their contributions to American society.
Additionally, this story touches on a number of subjects seldom mentioned in film, including the harsh realities of life on a sugar cane plantation, the contributions of women in the military during WWII, the Japanese occupations of Korea and Okinawa, and more.
Finally, this film is unique because many of the stories within it were directly told to the writer by the actual veterans who experienced it. As very few remain, it's my hope that they'll finally see their story told in film.
This script has been reviewed by several leaders and members of Nisei veteran organizations and has received broad support, and their feedback has been used to ensure accuracy and improve the representation.
I've enjoyed writing since I was a small child, but have spent most of my career as an ER nurse. Through this work, I've been fortunate to care for a number of WWII veterans, including many from the 100th Battalion and 442nd RCT. I enjoyed hearing their stories so much that I joined the Sons and Daughters of the 442nd, and eventually became their Vice President. Through work on archiving the unit's history, I was disappointed to realize that no major motion picture has adequately told the story of these heroic Americans. I decided to write it myself, with expert consultation from professional screenwriters to help guide my process. As a screenwriter, I would like to collaborate with marginalized groups of people to help them tell their stories.
My next screenplay is coming soon.
